President Obama Proposes American Jobs Act

President Obama came out with guns blazing as he spoke boldly to congress and his critics in his jobs speech. Obama proposed what he called the American Jobs Act, which he said would cut payroll taxes in half for working Americans and most small businesses, and boost spending on public works, like roads, by $105 billion. The plan would make last year's cut in the individual Social Security tax rate, from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent, permanent.

Obama did not say how much the plan would cost but he did mention that he it would not affect the deficit as it would be payed for it by closing corporate tax "loopholes" and by raising taxes on wealthier Americans. According to NBC News the cost would run about $450 billion.

"We need a tax code where everyone gets a fair shake and everybody pays their fair share," he said. "And I believe the vast majority of wealthy Americans and CEOs are willing to do just that if it helps the economy grow and gets our fiscal house in order."

The President spoke very different in his speech, not like his other speeches of the past, he was much more serious and unforgiving. Obama challenged both Congress and Republicans to forget politics and get the job done.

Republicans offered no formal rebuttal to the address, but in a written statement, Boehner agreed that Obama's proposals "merit consideration."

No New Jobs Created In July 2011

The job market has come to a screeching halt, according to the August 2o11 jobs report no new jobs were created in July 2011, this left the overall unemployment rate unchanged at 9.1%. But the shocking numbers came from the unemployment rate of African Americans which is now at 16.7%, which is the highest among all the other demographics. This is the highest in nearly 30 years and the markets are not reacting well to this dismal jobs report.

The U.S. is clearly headed in the wrong direction with creating jobs, we are at depression levels and something needs to be done. This has many calling on President Obama to do something bold to fix this problem. Democrats and Republicans both need to work together to help the American people in these hard times.
